17th of March 2010, Istanbul

The staff of EDROM, one of the member organisations of the ERGO network in Turkey, has been very busy organising their to have a voice on the Roma meeting with  Prime Minister Erdogan this past weekend. About 1,000 Roma from Edirne attended the official meeting, together with more than 10,000 Roma from all over Turkey. Although the meeting can be called successful in numbers of participants, EDROM is still critical on the content and the follow-up of the meeting.

Nice words were spoken by government, but now it is important to put them into action. This is the shared view of EDROM staff. They were disappointed that it looked as if Roma mostly dance and play drums, and not if they are a serious discussion partner when it comes to politics.

But the staff of EDROM was also positive about the efforts from government and Roma to listen to each other. ‘The Prime Minister said that the Turkish government will start to solve housing issues and education issues, and will give the opportunity to Roma people to work in public works. The way this will happen is not clear yet. It is important for us and our members that this meeting is sustainable and that it is clear how to improve the situation together. From now on we will monitor government on what have been discussed in this meeting and hope they will keep their promises’.
