Introduction to our case studies
Based on more than fifteen years of experience in nine countries in Central and Eastern Europe, Spolu is convinced that empowerment of Roma is an important key to their equal participation in society. Years of denial and discrimination have placed Roma in a position of dependency. Through stimulating self-organisation, existing capacity is developed further and Roma increase their negotiating power to influence policies and politics and to advocate for equal participation as respected citizens in society. Spolu’s partner organisations have a big share in the stimulation of initiative in local Roma communities. Roma are encouraged to become actors of change by working together and being actively involved in the activities. ERGO and its members aim to contribute to the creation of a Roma movement as a common voice to authorities and institutions on local, national and international level.
The leading question in ERGO’s work is: How do our activities contribute to the mobilisation and self-organisation of Roma and their participation in a wider Roma movement? In order to gain in-depth insight in the opportunities and obstacles for mobilisation of Roma, here we present a number of case studies which were conducted in Albania, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Romania and Slovakia.
